CITY OF FALLEN ANGELS BY CASSANDRA CLARE

This is my last review for the year 2011 since I’ll probably be somewhere out there by tomorrow and won’t be back until the second of January so I’ll try to make this substantial as much as possible. I recently finished reading City Of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare. It’s the fourth novel from The Mortal Instruments series. It’s a new story arc that is set two months after the third book which is City Of Glass.

Here’s my review for City Of Glass.

To be honest, I had second thoughts before I decided to give this fourth installment a shot. I think the TMI trilogy ended perfectly so I was like “WTF?! A fourth book? This might ruin the series for me.” But then again, it was Cassie Clare so whatever, I decided to go for it. I finished this book yesterday and I have to say that I liked it. I liked the way it opened up with Izzy and Simon dating. I love those two and I love the way Ms. Clare wrote about how their story progressed since I’m not really a big Clary -Jace fan. Yeah, they had the spotlight in the first trilogy can Izzy and Simon have it this time? I actually found myself enjoying the story more than I enjoyed City Of Glass since Clary did not annoy me as much as she did in the previous novels. Simon and Izzy are like magnets. They’re complete opposites who can’t help but be attracted to each other. And I love them both! :)
Anyway, I think it’s kinda weird that people keep on complaining about those unanswered riddles. True, the story ended with a lot of “WTH?!” but I think that’s the exact purpose of first novels in every series.  The first novels should “introduce” the story, the characters, the conflict, etc. Hey! If the first one could answer everything then why make it a series? The upcoming ones should build up the climax while the last one should conclude everything. Well, yeah this isn’t exactly a first in TMI but a lot of things happened in the last two months, there are new characters involved and as I’ve mentioned earlier it’s a new story arc so a proper recap or whatever should be written. And I think City Of Fallen Angels did a great job at introducing everything that’s new in this story. So people, stop complaining. Read the last two novels. And if the hanging questions had not been answered up to that point then let’s all complain. haha. Bottom line is I can’t wait for the fifth novel! haha.

 I’d give this a 4/5 star rating.

CITY OF ASHES BY CASSANDRA CLARE

Moving on to the City Of Ashes since again I was too lazy to write a decent review even though I enjoyed reading this series a lot. I have to give this novel its due credit and it does not deserve a crappy review like the bulk review that I posted a few days ago. So here it goes.

The story starts with Valentine in action in Metropole, Manhattan. And when I say action it means he’s doing something evil again. haha. And you’ll have to read the novel to actually know why he did whatever it is that he’s been doing in the last couple of days. Anyway, moving on to the other characters, I didn’t like Jace as much as I liked him in the first novel. He became self-destructive in this second installment because of “Valentine’s revelation” regarding his family background. No, I will not write “Valentine’s revelation” here since it will spoil the story. You have to read it if you want to know what it is. haha. *evil laugh* At least the sarcasm is still a part of his personality which is what I like about him.

Anyway, moving on to Clary, I did not like her here. I didn’t like the way she treated Simon and Jace. Yeah, Jace was a little bit mean and a little more self-absorbed than he usually is but she didn’t have to treat him the way she did. I think Clary could’ve handled things better. And as for Simon, he deserves better. He should never be a substitute. Bottom line is I didn’t like Clary here but not to the point of hatred though. haha. Plus, there was a part in the novel wherein I wanted to hit Clary or something for being so stupid. I still like Izzy/ Isabelle more than I like her. haha.

And as for Alec, Alec will be Alec and I can’t help but liking him more here. He was given more screen/ page time in this second installment which I actually like. I like the way he takes care of his little sister Izzy. Plus the fact that he is the most level- headed among the trio.

As always, Cassandra Clare did not fail to make me like this novel. She made Clary lovable for me even though I did not exactly like her. There were also times when I just wanted to give Jace a hug or something. Plus, the way she describes their world in pen and paper is simply amazing. Anyway, I’m giving this a 4/5 star rating again. :)

CITY OF BONES BY CASSANDRA CLARE

Sooooo, I was a little bit lazy when I decided to review The Mortal Instruments trilogy so, I wrote my review in bulk. haha. And right now, I feel like making a decent review for each book. Let’s start of with the City Of Bones. The story revolves around the lives of three Shadowhunters and two Mundanes whose lives are suddenly intertwined because of old secrets unknown to them.

I have to be honest here the first part of the book was a little too bland for my taste but as the story progressed I found myself immersed in it completely. Especially the part where the Shadowhunters entered the picture. I like the dynamics and the interaction that went on between the characters. I actually liked Clary, though I still prefer Isabelle over her, in this first installment. She didn’t annoy me as much as she did in the last two books. And I love Jace, he is probably the hottest Shadowhunter out there. haha. Simon wasn’t given that much screen time or should I say page time in this novel. I love him and will always have a soft spot for him. I still liked his appearances in the book though.

It might have been bland or boring during the first few pages or chapters but as the story progressed I found myself wanting to know more and more about the story behind each of the people involved. Cassandra Clare certainly knows how to pique my interest. The last three or four chapters of the book actually made me get out of bed and buy the next one. And I did. haha.

I’d give this book a 4 out 5 stars.

QUEEN OF THE DEAD BY STACEY KADE

So after reading The Ghost and The Goth for the second time I read Queen Of The Dead by Stacey Kade, the second book from The Ghost and The Goth series. Again, the story revolves around Will and Alona.

Again, I will not write about the story or any form of a giveaway for the story in this review.  I’ll try not to be a spoiler because I want you to read it so I’ll try to focus more on the characters, the entertainment value and the writing style. Anyway, I loved Alona and Will here. They have this couple/ not so couple thing going on and I love it. I love the way Ms. Kade developed the storyline. There were moments when I just wanted to hug Alona or Will. I mean, I get it Alona’s dead and Will’s alive their relationship/ not relationship is just impossible but I just can’t help but sympathize with the two of them. I loved the way Stacey Kade developed Alona’s character, she has changed in a lot of ways and as for Will, he’s adorable as always. He’s become stronger in a lot of ways too. Maybe it’s because of Alona?? :)
Anyway, there were also new characters like Mina and the members of this Order thingy. I didn’t pay that much attention to them though because I didn’t like them that much. PERIOD. Well, maybe except for Lucy. But you’ll have to find out who she is, so you’ll have to read the novel if you’re curious! haha. I didn’t like Mina at all. I think she’s a trying hard wanna be. haha. I just didn’t like her. PERIOD.
I love this book as much as I loved the first one. I found myself immersed in it completely. It’s a sad and yet happy novel. I don’t know, I can’t explain it. All I know is I love, love, love it. It didn’t really disappoint me like some other series did. *coughs* I actually enjoyed going through the pages. I love the way these books are written since it always seems like I’m watching a movie or something. Anyway, I’d give this a 5/5 stars rating.
BTW, Hyperion, the publisher, will be releasing the paperback edition of Queen Of The Dead and this will be the new cover. :)

THE GHOST AND THE GOTH BY STACEY KADE

I just finished reading The Ghost And The Goth by Stacey Kade for the second time yesterday and I guess it’s time to make a decent review about it. It’s about a ghost who used to be little miss popular Alona Dare and ghost seeing social outcast Will Killian.

I know, very typical  but my introduction does not really give this novel any justice neither does the plot from Goodreads.com. I didn’t really have high expectations the first time I read it which is probably why I enjoyed it that much. It actually reminds me of the 1995 film, Casper, with their roles reversed. It had the cliche two main characters hate each other but then end up falling in love with each other anyway thing but Ms. Kade was able to pull it off. I actually enjoyed this novel a lot. Stacey Kade made the seemingly annoying Alona very lovable. She was the typical mean girl whom you’d love to hate but instead of hating her I actually loved her. She didn’t irritate me in any way. And Will, I just love Will. I don’t know I guess I just have this thing for social outcasts. I loved Will from the very start. He’s just so endearing and I love him. Haha. Oh yes, I’ve been saying “LOVE” a lot in this review because I LOVED IT that much. I love the development of their love story too. It wasn’t too cheesy and corny, it was actually adorable and fun to read.
It’s a light and fun read and I wouldn’t mind reading it again. I just love Alona and Will. And yeah, as some of you might have noticed if you’ve been reading my reviews, I’m not really a fan of female characters since they tend to be annoyng whiny bitches at some point in the story. But Alona is different, I adored her from the very start up to the very end of the novel. I like Stacey Kade’s style. Every page is like watching a movie and you just can’t help but flip through it up to the very end. There are no blah moments on every page. I just finished reading the second book Queen Of The Dead a few minutes ago and I can’t wait for the third book Body & Soul to come out.
